Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the breakbulk logistics industry was already experiencing a concerning and widening talent gap. The ongoing effects of the pandemic, including furlough and industry mergers have caused another shrink in the talent pool making this situation more critical than ever. The breakbulk industry relies on specially trained and skilled workers to effectively operate and coupled with the changing project landscape, it is more important than ever that we begin making efforts to close this gap to ensure future industry sustainability. This session will bring together a panel from across the supply chain to discuss:

  • How the industry can play its part in attracting skilled talent to the sector
  • Overcoming barriers to those wanting to enter the industry
  • New avenues for promoting careers within the industry

This session will bring together top experts to discuss the outlook and impact of the current freight rates on business and the supply chain. Rates have been extraordinarily high for nearly a year now, with mixed views over when they will return to ‘normal’. The logistics industry has had to reassess ways of working to keep cargo moving. Our panel will look at providing answers to the following questions:

  • When do we expect things to change?
  • Where can we see opportunities with the current situation?
  • What role can the breakbulk industry play to ease the situation?
  • How are companies successfully navigating the current situation?
  • How can we learn from companies who have successfully managed changes of going from a buyer to a sellers’ market in the past?

It is by no means a new topic that the breakbulk industry is lagging behind when it comes to digital transformation with a long way to go before the industry reaches its potential. The past couple of years have clearly demonstrated the value of more automated and digital processes and there is greater understanding of the efficiency gains that can be made with more integration of technology. Despite this, there is still push back and hesitation from across the supply chain to fully embrace technology. To help with moving the industry forward, this session aims to provide insights on:

  • Companies leading the way and digitally transforming business models e.g. port community systems and freight platforms
  • Increasing efficiency and adding value to customers through technology
  • What the market requirements and demands are

The crewing crisis that began at the beginning of the pandemic is still very much a crisis, 2 years on. With each country setting their own rules and regulations, it makes it impossible to effectively manage crew changes for this global industry. With the effects of the pandemic set to continue for the coming years, and ongoing restrictions, as an industry, we need to ensure that we come together and do all that we can to ensure there is greater visibility and recognition needed to support our seafarers. This session will cover:

  • Negative effects of extended trips
  • COVID vaccinations for seafarers
  • Humanitarian treatment of seafarers
  • Abandoned seafarers around the world
  • Salary cuts

The ongoing effects of the pandemic has accelerated the move towards a green and sustainable future with the global energy transition being the foundation of this movement. The transition to greener energy will continue to gain momentum over the coming years as countries build back economies ‘better’ through green investment and incentives. Oil majors are diversifying portfolios towards renewables and this movement will, in turn, impact the supply chains that serve them. This session will delve deeper into how the Middle East is playing their role in the global energy transition and how the industry can best prepare themselves for what is to come over the next decade and beyond.

Sponsor Profile: Any company throughout the supply chain with a focus on the energy transition e.g., freight forwarders
