Four Hulking Units Transported from South Korea to Ras Al Khair Port
Saudi Arabia-based Almajdouie Logistics has teamed up with compatriot Bahri Logistics to deliver four Goliath cranes from the Port of Daebul in South Korea to the King Salman Global Maritime Industries Complex on the kingdom’s east coast.
The shipment weighing a combined 18,128 metric tonnes was discharged at the nearby Ras Al Khair Port, then loaded onto barges and shipped along the coast to a heavy-duty jetty close to the King Salman shipbuilding complex, which is still under construction.
The height and weight of the cranes had prevented overland transfer from Ras Al Khair to the installation site, a distance of just a few kilometres.
“RAK port is surrounded by many conveyors used for different plants and many underground utilities passing under the roads, so it was not possible to transport these units by road,” Eyad Hamza Arafah, heavy transportation and project logistics director at Almajdouie, told Breakbulk.
The heavy-lift specialist faced a further challenge after discovering the highway from the jetty to the installation site was unable to bear the size of the cranes. “To overcome this, road widening and compaction were done with the help of the client,” Arafah said.
A temporary storage area was prepared close to the jetty where the gantries were stored prior to final-mile delivery using self-propelled modular transporters, or SPMTs.
The cranes, which have a combined lifting capacity of 2,100 tonnes over a single drydock, the largest in the MENA region, are earmarked for shipbuilding activities at International Maritime Industries’ facilities at the King Salman complex.
